Soft Texture for the Shade Garden

Lady Fern (Athyrium filix-femina) is loved for its graceful, finely divided fronds and soft, feathery appearance. Growing in an upright, arching clump, it adds beautiful texture without overwhelming neighboring plants.

Plant it in part shade to full shade in rich, moist, well-drained soil. Lady Fern works beautifully in woodland gardens, shady borders, and near ponds or streams. Consistent moisture will keep the foliage looking its best.

Good to Know: The native status on this one is a little complicated. Southern Lady Fern (Athyrium asplenioides), formerly classified as a variety of A. filix-femina, is the lady fern native throughout South Carolina and is the better choice for our Coastal Plain. Clemson specifically notes that A. filix-femina is recommended throughout South Carolina except the coast.
