Summer in the Lowcountry brings long days, lush growth, and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the garden- but it also brings heat and humidity. As temperatures climb, many gardeners find that the best time to tend their landscapes is during the early morning hours.

Gardening in the morning offers many benefits for both you and the plants. Cooler temperatures make outdoor tasks much more comfortable and reduce the risk of heat-related illness. Early mornings also provide an opportunity to work before the strongest sunlight and highest temperatures of the day arrive.
For plants, morning watering is especially beneficial. Water has time to soak into the soil before it can evaporate in the afternoon heat, helping roots stay hydrated throughout the day. Watering in the morning can also reduce the likelihood of fungal diseases that may develop when foliage remains wet overnight.

Morning is also one of the most entertaining times to observe the garden. Pollinators have begun their daily activity, flowers are opening to greet the day, and you are more likely to spot signs of stress, pests, or disease before the heat of the afternoon sets in.
Whether you're deadheading flowers, harvesting vegetables, pulling weeds, or simply enjoying a cup of coffee among the blooms, spending time in the garden each morning can be a rewarding way to connect with nature while working with the rhythm of the season.
