Measured Grace: Karen Prewitt on the Legacy of Loutrel Briggs
Step into the quiet geometry of Charleston’s iconic courtyards. Karen Prewitt—garden sleuth, storyteller, and the official biographer of Loutrel Briggs. She will discuss the personal Man Behind the Legend and how his landscape plans were influenced by the Italian Renaissance.
We will break for lunch around noon, then return to the classroom for a deeper dive: translating those timeless moves into today’s courtyards and backyards.
Karen Prewitt discovered and cataloged 1,000+ original Briggs drawings for the S.C. Historical Society in 1990 and wrote the definitive article on his work—the foundation for what we know today. The Briggs family later named her his official biographer and granted her the copyright to Charleston Gardens. A past president of The Garden Club of Charleston, Karen’s passion for garden history blossomed while living abroad—especially during two years in Italy—and now fuels her mission to keep Charleston’s garden…
