About the event
Woven Roots: A Sweetgrass Basket Workshop with Sarah Edwards-Hammond
Join local artisan Sarah Edwards-Hammond for an immersive, hands-on introduction to sweetgrass basketry—a living art that has been central to the Gullah Geechee community of the Lowcountry since the 17th century. Sarah comes from a long line of basket makers and has spent years passing the tradition to her family and neighbors; in this workshop, she’ll welcome you into that lineage with warmth and skill.
We’ll begin with a brief, engaging history of sweetgrass baskets—how they’re made, why they matter, and the cultural story they carry in Charleston. Then we’ll roll up our sleeves: guided by Sarah, you’ll spend the rest of the session making your own basket, learning foundational techniques step by step at an easy, conversational pace.
